Stanford and Cal both released their 2023 football schedules Wednesday morning as the Pac-12 unveiled its plan for the fall.
The Bears and Cardinal will play each other the weekend before Thanksgiving, as they have in recent years, including last season’s 27-20 Cal victory.
Stanford coach Troy Taylor, the former Bears quarterback and Sacramento State head coach, will take the field for the first time on Friday, Sept. 1 at Hawaii. He’s taking over for David Shaw, the Cardinal’s record-holder for most wins as a head coach after going 96-54 in 11 seasons.
The Cardinal opens conference play the following week at USC in the final scheduled matchup between the Pac-12’s two private institutions. USC, along with UCLA, will leave in 2024 for the Big Ten.
Cal’s game against the Bruins is the inverse: California’s two Pac-12 public schools will face each other on the final day of the regular season, Nov. 25, in Pasadena. The Cardinal will host UCLA on Oct. 21, and the Bears meet the Trojans in Berkeley one week later.
Taylor will face his former team in Stanford’s home opener against Sacramento State Sept. 16, the first of three straight home games.
The Bears open their season with a surprising road date at North Texas (Sept. 2) before hosting Auburn and Idaho the subsequent Saturdays.
Cal will face nine teams that played in bowl games last season, while Stanford plays eight. Stanford will play at Colorado, with new coach Deion Sanders, on Friday, Oct. 13, and the Bears face Arizona State and new coach Kenny Dillingham on Sept. 30 in Berkeley.
If either team surprises with a new starting quarterback — Stanford’s Tanner McKee declared for the NFL Draft and Cal’s Jack Plummer is transferring to Louisville — they could play in the Pac-12 title game, which is scheduled for Fri. Dec. 1.
