Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei has urged athletes to take part in the ongoing Cross country meetings across the country for them to secure a chance to run for the country at the World Cross country championships set for February 18th in Bathurst, Australia.

He said that organizers of the championships have told them that they should send the names of competitors by December first 2022, more than two months to the global showpiece.

“As a federation, preparations for the world cross country championships have started in earnest where this time it will be held earlier than other years because we normally host in March. We have already started our cross country series ahead of national championships in Ruiru. I want to appeal to athletes that we want to take a strong team to Bathurst. And we have instructions that we must send the names of the competitors by December 1st,” said Tuwei.

He said that by December first, they would not have selected the team but they are searching for probables and they will send slightly more names as they wait to select among the probables and cover a wider range.

“So we have asked athletes to compete in the cross country series before the first of December so that we can see how they are training, their fitness so that we can have a good team. We are also going to speak to the Embassy of Australia to understand our situation. We intend to have a larger team for the purpose of good returns and select the team officially at the national championships. The reason why we are doing this is because document processing may take time. So I want to urge our athletes to attend these cross country series so that we can pick the team in advance. But as soon as we host the national championships, we shall announce the actual team,” he said.

He added that any athlete who wants to be in the probable list and qualify for national championships, they should understand why the names have been sent in advance.

“It is always good for athletes, even the ones in the field, track and road running to compete at the cross country meetings in terms of preparation because when an athlete prepares very well, at the beginning of the season they are likely to do well during the whole season. Let us not wait until the event comes like track and field before running. Let us start now and one doesn’t need to run the whole series but let us start getting into that mood of competition for next season,” added Tuwei.
